The American Goldfinch, or Carduelis tristis, is a member of the Fringillidae family. It is often known as the "wild canary," because of its brilliant song and bright yellow feathers. It is found throughout the United States, as well as into parts of Canada and Mexico.
This song-bird is showy with its bright yellow plumage. The male is a bright canary yellow with a black crown on its head and black on its wings. The American Goldfinch's belly is usually yellow, but sometimes white. The female American Goldfinch is duller than the male and doesn't have a crown. Also, instead of black parts on her wing, she has brown or gray. Both sexes have an orange beak, and orange feet.
